An important facet of improving the health and well-being of the Coconut Hounds and Coconut Cats in our area is dedicating time and resources to controlling the animal overpopulation problem through geographically targeted spay/neuter clinics in our Community Outreach areas. If we can spay one dog then that prevents several more litters of puppies who would have likely had many litters of their own, and those litters would also have litters. So through effective spay/neuter we can literally reduce the population of animals by tens of thousands of animals.
We target animals that are in our Community Outreach Program as the most effective way to maximize the success of this program. By working with animals that we visit on a monthly basis, we can ensure that the animals are healthier when they come into the clinic, that they are watched over after their surgery, and are also supervised over long-term to better ensure their survival. Targeting geographic areas also allows us to create zones of healthy animals and then we can move on to a new area.
Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic has taken the unique step of buying an old airport shuttle bus, stripping out the seats, and creating a mobile spay/neuter clinic we affectionaly call the RESCUE ROVER. The Rescue Rover is fully equipped with 2 surgery tables and a prep table and has all the conveniences of a veterinary clinic including 2 anesthesia machines to provide safe and comfortable surgeries. Back-up batteries, a generator, and on site water storage allows us to drive the Rover into poor areas of the country and perform surgeries anywhere. Well-trained volunteers fill all the roles required for a clinic (besides the surgery) working at; check-in, cleaning instruments, drawing up meds, animal wrangling, surgery assisting, prepping the animals, and recovery.
Volunteer vets from all of the world have generously donated their time to do a clinic or two in the Rescue Rover while here on a vacation. We customize the clinics to whatever number and whatever length the visiting vet would like. We are always looking for new vets to help us out and so if you are a vet or know of a vet who might be interested in traveling here email firstname.lastname@example.org.

Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic has also teamed up with volunteer groups such as World Vets, Pets Without Vets, and Caribbean Spay Neuter to host mega spay/neuter clinics with many vets and many vet techs graciously donating their time and talent to fix hundreds of animals over a few days. These are an extremely effective way for us to accomplish our goal of helping to improve the health and welfare of our Coconuts Hounds and Coconut Cats.
